International Women’s Day was commemorated on 8 March 2026 at Enable Hall in Maruleng Local Municipality, highlighting the vital role of women in agriculture and rural economies. The event, led by the Office of the Premier with Acting Premier Mme Mavhungu Leruli and MEC for Limpopo Department of Education, emphasized women’s empowerment, equality, and leadership in farming communities. Farmers, local stakeholders, and government representatives gathered to celebrate women’s contributions to food production and rural development. International Women’s Day has its roots in early 20th-century labor movements in Europe and North America, reflecting decades of advocacy for women’s rights. While progress has been made globally, challenges persist in rural communities, where access to land, training, and markets often limits women’s agricultural opportunities.

Female farmers were a central focus of the celebration, showcasing their skills, products, and entrepreneurship. Acting Premier Mme Mavhungu Leruli and MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Mme Nakedi Kekana highlighted the importance of supporting women-led agricultural initiatives. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development provided a stall where women farmers sold their produce, giving them direct market access and exposure to potential buyers. The initiative encouraged participants to adopt value-adding techniques, diversify production, and explore sustainable farming practices that strengthen economic resilience. By integrating these strategies, female farmers are better positioned to improve yields, expand their businesses, and contribute meaningfully to local food security.

Among the participants, Rosinah Rakgoale presented a range of marula-based products, including Marula Achaar, Marula Juice, and Marula Sauce, demonstrating innovative ways to add value to indigenous crops. Hilda Vuma and Mapula Monyela from TSV Agribusiness in Molalane Village sold fresh eggs from their small-scale poultry enterprise, highlighting the potential of livestock farming for income generation. These examples illustrate practical approaches for women farmers to increase profitability while maintaining sustainable practices. Workshops and discussions at the event also emphasized soil management, crop rotation, and livestock care techniques relevant to smallholder farmers. Participants were encouraged to implement methods that improve productivity, reduce input costs, and enhance overall farm sustainability.

The event also focused on strengthening women’s knowledge in farm management, marketing, and biosecurity practices. Leaders highlighted the importance of mentorship, training programs, and cooperative networks to help women overcome challenges in production and market access. Practical guidance on improving harvest quality, storage, and transport of produce was provided, ensuring that farm products reach markets in optimal condition. Emphasis was placed on adopting sustainable and climate-smart practices that protect natural resources while enhancing productivity. By combining business skills with agricultural techniques, women farmers can create resilient enterprises capable of withstanding seasonal and economic pressures.

International Women’s Day in Maruleng showcased how women contribute to agricultural productivity, rural development, and community food security. The event reinforced the value of government support, market access, and training in empowering women to grow sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises. By promoting innovation, collaboration, and practical farming solutions, female farmers are equipped to improve yields, diversify crops, and develop value-added products. The celebration demonstrated that empowering women in agriculture strengthens both livelihoods and local economies, paving the way for more equitable and productive rural communities. With continued investment in skills, resources, and market opportunities, women-led farms in South Africa can play a leading role in sustainable agricultural growth.
