The Agricultural Research Council’s Vegetable Industrial and Medicinal Plant unit, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, hosted a Farmer Field Day at Makhathini Research Station, bringing together farmers from across the region to share knowledge and practical insights. The event was designed to connect farmers who play a vital role in sustaining rural communities and ensuring local food security. Participants had the opportunity to tour experimental fields, engage with researchers, and learn about best practices in crop management. By combining research expertise with practical experience, the field day aimed to equip farmers with the tools needed to improve productivity and strengthen their livelihoods. This initiative highlights the importance of collaborative learning and networking in advancing sustainable agriculture.

During the visit, farmers engaged in hands-on discussions about pest control strategies, soil management techniques, and methods for improving crop yields. Researchers and extension officers demonstrated practical solutions to common challenges, showing how to protect crops from pests while maintaining soil health and fertility. Farmers also received presentations on the management of specific crops such as okra and pigeon peas, as well as information on seed diseases that affect legumes and vegetables. These sessions provided critical insights for optimizing production and ensuring that crops remain healthy from planting to harvest. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences, creating an interactive environment for knowledge exchange.

The Farmer Field Day also included input from the Jozini Local Municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Representatives shared information on government support programmes, market access opportunities, and compliance requirements, giving farmers a broader understanding of the resources available to them. These discussions helped farmers plan for both short-term production improvements and long-term business growth. Understanding regulatory frameworks and accessing support services can be as important as improving agronomic practices, especially for smallholder farmers seeking to expand their operations. By connecting farmers with local authorities and extension services, the event strengthened the support system available to the agricultural community.

One of the most important outcomes of the day was the creation of space for farmers to exchange ideas and strengthen networks. Farmers shared strategies, successes, and lessons learned from their own operations, building relationships that can support collaboration and mutual learning. Networking at this level also fosters collective problem solving, where farmers can address challenges such as market access, crop diseases, and climate variability together. These connections contribute to food and nutrition security by ensuring that farmers can rely on each other for advice, shared resources, and guidance. Strong farmer networks also help rural communities remain resilient in the face of economic and environmental pressures.

The Farmer Field Day at Makhathini Research Station successfully combined research, practical learning, and networking to support rural farmers. By addressing pest control, soil management, crop improvement, and disease management, the event provided participants with actionable knowledge to increase productivity. Engagement with local government and agricultural departments reinforced the resources and support available for smallholder farmers. Most importantly, the day fostered collaboration and strengthened farmer networks, which are essential for sustainable food and nutrition security in the region. Initiatives like this demonstrate the value of combining scientific expertise with community engagement to empower farmers and improve agricultural outcomes.
