South Africa Opens New Export Market for Fresh Table Grapes to South Korea

South Africa has officially gained market access to export fresh table grapes to the Republic of Korea, a move expected to boost the agricultural sector and the broader economy. Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen confirmed that the Republic of Korea notified South Africa of the market opening on 23 January 2026, allowing producers to begin exporting as soon as the first consignment is ready. The achievement follows more than 20 years of negotiations between technical teams from both countries, including a physical field verification visit in February 2025 that led to the agreement on phytosanitary import requirements. This access strengthens South Africa’s position as a top global exporter of table grapes, supporting foreign exchange earnings and creating employment in rural areas.

The South African table grape industry remains a major contributor to the country’s agricultural growth, exporting roughly 55% of its produce to the European Union and 20% to the United Kingdom. The 2025/26 season is projected to yield around 79.4 million 4.5 kg cartons for export, showing a 0.6% increase from the previous season. With the opening of the Korean market, producers now have an additional lucrative outlet, providing opportunities for increased revenue and wider international recognition. Compliance with phytosanitary and food safety requirements is mandatory, and producers must follow the final import conditions outlined by the Department of Agriculture.

Exporters, production units, and packhouses must register with the Department of Agriculture to receive a production unit code and packhouse code, ensuring traceability and adherence to standards. Registered growers are required to implement good agricultural practices, including orchard sanitation, integrated pest management, and measures to control quarantine pests identified by the Republic of Korea. These standards protect both South Africa’s reputation as a reliable exporter and the sustainability of the new market. Non-compliance could jeopardize continued access, making strict adherence critical for long-term trade growth.
