MEC Motlhaping and HOD Monakali recently led SOPA build-up programmes in the Namakwa District, focusing on practical initiatives that support farmers, strengthen food security, and promote sustainable agriculture. The programmes combined hands-on activities with education, helping farmers, learners, and community members understand how environmental stewardship directly benefits crop production and farm productivity. By linking food security, conservation, and community engagement, the Department reinforced the role of sustainable practices in maintaining soil health, managing water resources, and improving yields. These efforts reflect government commitment to equipping smallholder and emerging farmers with tools, knowledge, and support to enhance agricultural resilience while protecting natural resources.

The first programme at Okiep Primary School involved cleaning, greening, and tree planting activities that demonstrate practical soil and land management techniques for farmers. Sessions on food security provided guidance on sustainable home and community gardening, including crop rotation, composting, and water-wise practices suitable for local conditions. Farmers and learners were also educated on safe snake handling and the risks of poaching, highlighting the importance of protecting livestock, crops, and wildlife that support healthy ecosystems. By participating in tree planting, farmers learned how trees can reduce soil erosion, provide shade for crops or livestock, and improve microclimates on farms. The hands-on approach allowed participants to see how small environmental actions can translate into tangible benefits for farm productivity.

The delegation also visited Goegap Nature Reserve, focusing on biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management, key components for long-term farming success. Farmers learned how protecting local plant and animal species can support pollination, natural pest control, and healthier grazing areas. Discussions covered strategies for integrating conservation practices into farmland, such as maintaining buffer zones, preserving indigenous vegetation, and managing water runoff. Exposure to the reserve’s conservation techniques offered practical lessons for preventing land degradation, improving soil fertility, and sustaining productive farmland. The visit reinforced the connection between environmental stewardship and profitable, resilient agriculture.

These SOPA build-up programmes emphasize community partnership and capacity building, ensuring that farmers gain practical skills to improve farm efficiency and sustainability. By combining education, tree planting, and on-site demonstrations, the Department equips farmers with strategies to enhance crop yields, protect livestock, and maintain healthy soils. Participants also received guidance on sustainable land use and resource management, which can reduce production costs and increase long-term farm profitability. Collaboration between government, schools, and conservation experts strengthens local knowledge networks, giving farmers access to practical expertise and support systems. The programmes encourage farmers to adopt practices that benefit both the environment and their livelihoods.

Through these initiatives, MEC Motlhaping and HOD Monakali have highlighted how environmental sustainability and food security go hand in hand with agricultural productivity in Namakwa. By providing farmers with hands-on training, practical demonstrations, and access to expert knowledge, the Department supports more resilient, productive, and sustainable farms. The integration of tree planting, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable gardening into farming practices ensures that communities can protect natural resources while improving yields and income. These programmes demonstrate a holistic approach to rural development, helping farmers build farms that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable.
