MEC Elzabe “Mmabatho” Rockman joined Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr. Mzwanele Nyhontso, in Bethlehem on 09 February 2026 for the handover of 58 land allocations, including 48 PLAS and 10 Tenure properties. The event marks a major milestone for emerging farmers who have been recovering from historic exclusion, providing them with legal ownership and the opportunity to expand agricultural activities. The Executive Mayor of Dihlabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Tseki Tseki, emphasized that citizens have the right to own land and access property, reinforcing the importance of secure tenure for productive farming. Mr. Piet Mothepu from AFASA highlighted that many emerging farmers still face challenges in accessing resources, training, and markets, making government support crucial. MEC Rockman encouraged recipients to view their land not just as property, but as a foundation for commitment, hard work, and sustainable production.

Minister Nyhontso explained that programmes such as Strategic Land Acquisition and Land Development Support are designed to help farmers succeed by providing infrastructure, equipment, and training. He stressed that land ownership must be paired with productive use, job creation, and contributions to the local economy. The Minister also addressed corruption as a key challenge and confirmed that investigations are underway to protect farmers’ rights and ensure fair support. Beneficiaries were urged to use their land efficiently and focus on cultivating crops or raising livestock to sustain livelihoods and strengthen community food security.

The handover was attended by prominent leaders, including the Chairperson of the Free State House of Traditional Leaders, Morena Neo Mopeli, Thabo Mofutsanyana District Executive Mayor Cllr. Conny Msibi, and the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Ms. Nonceba Mhlauli. Beneficiaries were encouraged to take full advantage of training programmes and government support to improve productivity and profitability. Minister Nyhontso emphasized that land reform is not only about ownership but about enabling farmers to thrive, produce high-quality crops, and engage in agribusiness opportunities.

MEC Rockman stressed the importance of clear communication in land allocation and urged farmers to actively engage with agricultural extension officers to improve yields. She noted that passion and dedication to the land are key to long-term success and sustainability. The event demonstrated the government’s commitment to supporting emerging farmers, advancing rural development, and boosting local agricultural output. With legal ownership and access to support, farmers are now better positioned to expand operations, create jobs, and contribute to regional economic growth.

This initiative represents a new era for farming in the Free State, combining land ownership with practical guidance to enhance productivity and secure farm futures. By integrating government support with commitment and hard work, beneficiaries can build thriving and sustainable agricultural enterprises. The handover of land is a stepping stone for emerging farmers to generate income, grow their operations, and strengthen local economies. This milestone reflects a long-term vision for empowering farmers and advancing rural development across the province.
