KwaZulu-Natal Premier Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli has officially handed over working equipment to Nkiyankiya Group, a 100 percent youth owned agricultural enterprise based in the province. The project is led by Mr Simphiwe Mthimkhulu, a qualified agriculture graduate, alongside Mr Unathi Mtimkhulu, who is currently studying Transport and Logistics. At the time of application, Mr Mthimkhulu was 32 years old and is turning 34 this year, reflecting the growing role of young professionals in commercial agriculture. The handover forms part of government efforts to strengthen youth participation in farming and rural economic development. This support positions Nkiyankiya Group to scale its operations and improve productivity in the livestock sector.

The enterprise was approved funding aimed at infrastructural development and production inputs to enhance its beef production capacity. The investment will fund the erection of approximately 3 kilometres of external fencing and internal camp fencing to improve grazing management and livestock control. The project will also acquire a tractor and related implements to support land preparation, feeding and general farm operations. In addition, funding will cover essential production inputs including breeding stock, medication and vaccines to ensure herd health and long term sustainability. These upgrades are designed to strengthen operational efficiency and boost output in a competitive agricultural market.

The breeding stock will include pregnant heifers from Bonsmara and Beefmaster breeds, both known for strong growth rates and adaptability to South African conditions. Mature bulls certified free from trichomoniasis, tuberculosis and brucellosis will also be procured to safeguard herd quality and biosecurity. By investing in disease free, high quality genetics, Nkiyankiya Group aims to build a productive herd that can deliver consistent returns. This approach aligns with national priorities to improve livestock standards and protect the beef value chain from preventable diseases. The inclusion of proper vaccination and medication plans further reinforces the farm’s long term sustainability strategy.
Beyond infrastructure and livestock development, the expansion of Nkiyankiya Group will create seven new full time employment opportunities. The positions include three general assistants, two security guards, one farm manager and one supervisor. These jobs will contribute to local economic growth and provide stable income for families in the surrounding community. Youth led agricultural enterprises play a key role in addressing unemployment while strengthening food security and rural development.
Premier Ntuli’s support highlights the provincial government’s commitment to empowering young farmers with the tools and resources required to succeed. By combining formal agricultural training, Continued professional development and targeted funding, Nkiyankiya Group represents a model for youth driven agribusiness growth in KwaZulu-Natal. The handover of equipment marks a significant milestone for the enterprise as it moves toward expanded production and increased market participation. With proper infrastructure, quality breeding stock and skilled management, the project is well positioned to contribute meaningfully to the province’s livestock industry and rural economy.
