The refurbishment of the water canal at the Dingleydale Irrigation Scheme in Dingledale near Bushbuckridge is set to begin soon following damage caused by recent heavy rains and floods. MEC Khethiwe Moeketsi confirmed the commitment during her on-farm intervention visit, assuring farmers that the Department is prioritising restoration to protect livelihoods. The 1748-hectare project, established in 1966, relies on the canal to supply water for furrow irrigation, supporting grain and vegetable production across the scheme. More than 300 families depend on the irrigation system for their daily income and food security, making the canal a critical component of the local agricultural economy. Repairing the canal will ensure consistent water flow and help farmers resume normal production schedules without further disruption.

The Dingleydale farmers play a key role in supplying fresh produce to both local and national markets. Their harvests are distributed to the Government Nutrition Program and major retail chains including Boxer, Spar, Pick & Pay, and Shoprite, covering areas in Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge, and Acornhoek. Consistent water supply from the canal directly affects their ability to meet these supply commitments and maintain reliable quality. Delays or disruptions in irrigation could impact not only local food security but also the income of farmers who rely on these contracts. The refurbishment is therefore both an economic and social priority for the community.

MEC Moeketsi emphasised the Department’s commitment to supporting farmers through infrastructure improvements and emergency responses. The intervention visit also allowed officials to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate resources for repair work. The refurbishment project will employ local contractors and provide temporary employment opportunities for community members, further supporting the local economy. Farmers expressed relief at the announcement, noting that timely repair will allow them to plan for upcoming planting and harvesting cycles. The Department will continue to monitor the scheme to ensure resilience against future floods and extreme weather events.

The Dingleydale Irrigation Scheme remains a vital hub for agricultural production in the region, combining historical significance with ongoing economic importance. Once the canal refurbishment is complete, the irrigation system will restore water access across the full 1748 hectares, securing crop yields and stabilising food supply chains. Government officials stressed that maintaining infrastructure like canals is essential to protecting both farmer livelihoods and broader community nutrition programs. Regular maintenance and monitoring are planned to prevent future disruptions and improve the scheme’s resilience. The project reflects a broader commitment to supporting smallholder farmers and sustaining regional agricultural productivity.

Farmers at Dingleydale rely on a combination of traditional knowledge and modern irrigation techniques to maximise crop production. The canal refurbishment will not only restore water flow but also provide an opportunity to upgrade sections of the system for improved efficiency. Enhanced irrigation will reduce water loss, optimise crop growth, and strengthen the scheme’s overall productivity. With restored infrastructure, farmers will be better positioned to meet market demands and contribute to regional food security. The project demonstrates the critical link between reliable irrigation, sustainable farming, and the economic well-being of rural communities.
