DARD Strengthens Farmer Support in Fezile Dabi with Foot-and-Mouth Disease Awareness

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) continued its provincial farmer engagement programme today at Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Hall in Sasolburg under Fezile Dabi District. The session, led by MEC Elzabe “Mmabatho” Rockman, focused on helping livestock farmers manage the ongoing threat of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and improve operational efficiency on their farms. MEC Rockman stressed that the disease remains a serious concern due to limited vaccine availability and urged farmers to follow strict biosecurity measures. She highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between the department and farmers to ensure timely communication and support in disease prevention and livestock management.

During the session, MEC Rockman advised farmers not to move animals between districts, as this increases the risk of spreading FMD. She also called on municipalities to assist in establishing temporary holding facilities to be used as pounds for livestock, ensuring that infected or at-risk animals can be managed effectively. Farmers received guidance on recognising early symptoms of FMD, managing infected animals, and implementing quarantine measures to protect healthy livestock. These practical interventions aim to reduce the impact of outbreaks and safeguard livestock productivity in the province.

The engagement also served as a platform for farmers to share their experiences and challenges with FMD and other livestock-related issues. Discussions covered best practices for herd management, disease prevention, and maintaining healthy grazing areas. By participating in these sessions, farmers can adopt strategies to limit the spread of disease, reduce losses, and protect their income. MEC Rockman emphasised that consistent collaboration between the department and farmers is key to maintaining a strong and sustainable livestock sector.

In addition to disease management, the session included information on support services available to farmers. This included technical advice, access to resources, and guidance on compliance with animal health regulations. Farmers were encouraged to actively engage with local veterinary services and leverage government support to strengthen biosecurity measures on their farms. The session also highlighted the value of temporary holding facilities and proper record-keeping for livestock movement as practical steps to protect herds.

By hosting these engagement sessions, DARD demonstrates its commitment to empowering farmers with knowledge and tools to manage Foot-and-Mouth Disease effectively. The initiative supports sustainable livestock production, protects livelihoods, and enhances food security in Fezile Dabi District. Farmers left the session equipped with actionable strategies to safeguard their animals, improve operational efficiency, and collaborate with the department to address ongoing livestock challenges.
