The Capricorn District Stakeholder Engagement took place at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane, bringing together government leaders, traditional authorities, industry partners and farmers from across the district. The session created a platform to discuss agricultural development, service delivery challenges and practical solutions that can improve farming operations on the ground. Farmers raised concerns about access to markets, irrigation support, and timely delivery of government services, emphasizing the need for programmes that respond to local realities. The engagement also focused on sustainable farming practices and ways to increase productivity while protecting the land. By linking farmers directly with decision makers, the department aimed to improve coordination and ensure policies reflect real conditions on the farm.

Farmers praised the initiative for promoting inclusive planning and stronger collaboration between government and rural communities. Many noted that previous policies often overlooked smallholder farmers, and sessions like this allow their voices to be heard. Stakeholders discussed challenges such as unpredictable weather, limited mechanization, and access to finance, while exploring solutions like community cooperatives, training programs, and support for agribusiness ventures. Participants highlighted that continuous dialogue helps identify problems early and implement practical interventions that can improve yields and income. The engagement emphasized accountability and transparency to build trust between farmers and government agencies.

Strategic presentations from industry leaders focused on value chain development, improved access to agricultural technology, and initiatives to support youth and women in farming. MEC Nakedi Grace Kekana delivered a keynote address, reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting farmers through inclusive and sustainable agriculture. She highlighted initiatives aimed at providing inputs, training, and financial support, and encouraged farmers to actively participate in planning processes. The session reinforced that government and private sector collaboration is key to creating resilient farming communities.

This event marked the first of a series of stakeholder engagements planned across all districts in Limpopo Province. The program aims to gather local insights that will shape future interventions, strengthen rural economies, and increase access to resources for small and emerging farmers. Farmers can expect follow-up initiatives that address practical challenges and provide tools for growth. By maintaining ongoing dialogue, the department seeks to make farming in Limpopo more productive, sustainable, and inclusive.
