The MEC for Agriculture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, visited Mbhashe Local Municipality to raise awareness among farmers about Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and measures to curb its spread. The campaign targeted farming communities in Gatyana, Dutywa, and Xhora, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and early reporting.

During the campaign, MEC Kontsiwe addressed farmers directly, highlighting key symptoms of FMD, including excessive salivation, and the presence of sores or blisters in the mouth and on the feet of affected animals. She stressed that prompt reporting of suspected cases to veterinary authorities is essential to prevent wider outbreaks.

Farmers attending the campaign acknowledged the value of the information shared. They noted that the engagement provided clear guidance on the precautionary steps required to protect livestock and safeguard their livelihoods.

MEC Kontsiwe was accompanied by parliamentary member Hon Nozibele Nyalambisa, local mayor Dr Samkelo Janda, and veterinary doctors. Together, they discussed practical approaches to controlling the spread of FMD, including proper hygiene, quarantine procedures, and monitoring of herds for early signs of infection.

The campaign also served as an opportunity for farmers to ask questions and receive guidance from experts on the frontlines of animal health. The collaborative approach between government officials and veterinary professionals helped strengthen trust and knowledge within the farming community.

Through these awareness initiatives, the Department of Agriculture aims to minimize the impact of FMD, protect livestock populations, and support farmers in maintaining healthy and productive herds across the Mbhashe Local Municipality.
