MEC Elzabe Rockman of the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs led a hands-on back-to-school programme at Beang Tse Molemo Secondary School, welcoming learners and staff back after the holidays. The visit focused on practical agricultural support and building skills that can be applied in real-world farming.

During the programme, MEC Rockman distributed seeds including maize, spinach, and tomatoes, along with essential farming tools such as hoes, watering cans, and seedling trays. Learners actively participated in planting and preparing the school garden, gaining first-hand experience in crop management, soil preparation, and irrigation techniques. Educators guided students on sustainable gardening practices, teaching methods to improve yields while conserving resources.

The initiative forms part of a broader provincial effort to establish sustainable school gardens that enhance nutrition and stimulate youth interest in agriculture. Learners have already begun tracking growth rates, monitoring plant health, and harvesting vegetables for the school kitchen. “It is exciting to see students applying what they learn and contributing to their own food production,” said a school educator.

MEC Rockman emphasized that food security remains a top priority for the department. She encouraged schools and communities to embrace initiatives that drive agricultural growth and develop the next generation of farmers. The department will continue monitoring the gardens, providing technical guidance, and supporting learners to ensure long-term success.

By combining education with practical farming skills, the programme gives learners confidence in agribusiness and hands-on agriculture. It also reinforces the role of schools as centres for sustainable food production and agricultural innovation, benefiting both students and the broader community. This approach demonstrates how government-led agricultural programmes can inspire youth, improve nutrition, and develop a skilled workforce for the future of South African agriculture.
