The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has stepped up farmer support in the 2025/26 financial year. Led by Hon. MEC Thembeni KaMadlopha Mthethwa, the department issued a clear call to registered agricultural enterprises to apply for assistance under the 2025/26 Multi-Planting Season Programme. The focus is simple. Boost production, protect livelihoods and strengthen rural economies.

The programme is active across all 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal. This wide rollout ensures fair access for farmers in rural and semi rural areas. Small scale producers and emerging enterprises benefit alongside more established operations. The department aligned support with the planting calendar to avoid delays and reduce risk.

Farmers with successful applications are already receiving support. Those approved for mechanisation assistance are accessing equipment and services that speed up land preparation. Farmers approved for production inputs are receiving seed and fertiliser to improve yields. This targeted support lowers input costs and increases efficiency during the critical planting period.

Mechanisation plays a key role in the programme. It reduces reliance on manual labour and improves consistency in field operations. Production input support helps farmers plant on time and maintain crop quality. Together, these interventions address real constraints faced by farmers across the province.

The Gwamanda Agricultural Project in uMsinga shows what focused support can achieve. The project unites 50 family members who cultivate 50 hectares of land. Their shared mission is to fight poverty through agriculture and build a stable source of income for future generations.

Through discipline and collective effort, the project qualified for the 2025/26 Mechanisation Programme. The support improved their capacity to manage land efficiently and increase output. It also strengthened the long term sustainability of the project by reducing operational strain.

This example reflects the broader impact of the Multi-Planting Season Programme. When farmers receive timely and practical support, they expand production and create local economic value. Increased output improves food availability and supports job creation in rural communities.

The department continues to prioritise resilient and sustainable agricultural enterprises. Its approach links financial planning with seasonal production needs. This strategy helps farmers plan better and respond to changing conditions.

The 2025/26 Multi-Planting Season Programme confirms the department’s commitment to meaningful farmer support. By rolling out assistance across all districts and focusing on mechanisation and inputs, the programme strengthens agricultural capacity. Success stories like the Gwamanda Agricultural Project prove that consistent effort and targeted support can drive lasting rural development in KwaZulu-Natal.
