Free State MEC for the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs, Elzabe Rockman, held a Farmer’s Engagement session at Lenyora la Thuto Secondary School in Botshabelo. The session aimed to address critical issues in the agricultural sector, provide guidance to farmers, and strengthen communication between government and local producers. A key focus of the event was raising awareness about Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), a persistent challenge affecting livestock farming in the province.

The event began with a presentation by Dr. Thabo Lerotholi, the departmental veterinarian, who explained the nature of FMD, its symptoms, and the importance of early detection and prevention. Dr. Lerotholi highlighted the economic and animal health impacts of the disease, stressing the role of farmers in reporting suspected cases promptly. Attendees were advised on biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols, and monitoring practices to reduce the spread of FMD and protect herd health.

The second session featured Mr. Motlalepule Moila, Chairperson of the Botshabelo Livestock Committee, who provided a brief history of the committee and its mandate to support local livestock farmers. Mr. Moila emphasised the committee’s role in advocating for farmers and coordinating assistance from government and other stakeholders. Following his address, farmers representing various commodities were given the opportunity to raise their concerns directly with MEC Rockman and departmental representatives, ensuring their challenges were heard and addressed in real time.

The engagement session provided a platform for direct dialogue between farmers and officials, fostering collaboration and strengthening the relationship between local producers and government. By addressing pressing issues like FMD and operational challenges faced by different farm sectors, the event aimed to improve agricultural productivity, animal health, and sustainability in the Free State. Farmers left the session with practical guidance, access to expert advice, and a clearer understanding of support structures available through the department.

This initiative reflects the MEC’s commitment to proactive communication, farmer support, and sustainable livestock management. By combining awareness, education, and direct consultation, the department ensures that farmers are better equipped to safeguard their livestock, maintain productivity, and contribute to the economic stability of the region’s agricultural sector.
