Yesterday Eastern Cape Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe officially launched the revitalisation of irrigation schemes in the province. The programme aims to restore agricultural production and revive what she described as the old days of irrigation farming. It targets 10 thousand hectares of underutilised irrigated land across the Eastern Cape. The initiative is designed to strengthen food production, stimulate the rural economy, create jobs and fight poverty. It marks a renewed commitment by government to unlock the province’s farming potential.

Kontsiwe said irrigation remains one of the most effective tools to stabilise production in a changing climate. Reliable water access allows farmers to plan better and improve yields. The revitalisation programme focuses on repairing infrastructure, improving water management and supporting farmer participation. By bringing idle land back into production, the department expects increased output of crops and improved household food security. The programme also supports smallholder farmers who depend on irrigation for consistent income.

The launch also highlighted the role of youth and technology in modern agriculture. Kontsiwe met young farmer Thulani Magida who showcased how he uses drones to farm smart and fashionable. He explained how drone technology helps monitor crops, manage inputs and reduce costs. The demonstration showed how digital tools can improve efficiency and decision making on farms. It also reflected the province’s push to attract young people into agriculture.

National Department of Agriculture Deputy Minister Zoleka Capa attended the engagement and welcomed the innovation displayed by young farmers. She emphasised the need to combine revitalised infrastructure with modern skills and technology. The irrigation programme is expected to support sustainable production while creating employment in rural areas. Government believes restored schemes will improve local economies and strengthen value chains. The Eastern Cape aims to position irrigation farming as a driver of long term growth and resilience.
