The GDARD LandCare team launched the VeldCare Project at Libalata Farm in Kaalbasfontein, Westonaria. The launch brought new momentum to ongoing efforts to protect and restore local grasslands. You saw clear steps toward practical environmental action, supported by structured training and short term employment opportunities for local residents. The event created a foundation for steady progress in the months ahead.
The project targets Slangbos and other invasive weeds. These species reduce grazing quality, weaken soil health and strain local ecosystems. Removing them improves biodiversity and allows grassland vegetation to recover. The team will focus on consistent clearing and maintenance to support long term ecological gains.
A total of 25 community members have been employed through the EPWP for a three month contract that runs from 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026. This provides income support for local households and builds practical skills that participants can use after the contract ends.
The launch included several key activities. Contracting took place for all team members. Ministerial Determination training ensured workers understood employment standards and workplace rights. The team received PPE to support safe field operations. Induction sessions and team briefings prepared workers for the field tasks that start immediately.
The structured rollout gave the new LandCare EPWP team a strong start. The group now has clear responsibilities, proper equipment and basic training. Their work will support healthier grasslands and improve environmental resilience in the area.
The VeldCare Project begins with clear goals and practical steps. You can expect steady progress as the team clears invasive weeds and restores natural vegetation. The launch marked an important commitment to environmental protection, local employment and responsible land management in Westonaria.
