Stakeholders and small-scale farmers in the aquaculture sector recently gathered in Thulamahashe to discuss improvements to the national aquaculture policy. The meeting focused on ensuring clearer regulations, stronger training programs, and increased investment in innovation and environmental protection.
Participants reviewed the current policy, which has guided the sector for the past four years. They evaluated its achievements, identified gaps, and discussed lessons to inform a more relevant and effective framework. Farmers highlighted rising production costs, limited knowledge, insufficient support, and climate change pressures as key challenges not fully addressed by the existing policy.
Representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and other sector partners contributed insights based on international and local experiences. They emphasised the need for policies that support sustainable growth, improve market access, and encourage environmentally responsible practices.
The meeting in Thulamahashe is part of a series of consultations held across all eight provinces by the national Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. These consultations aim to capture the perspectives of small-scale fish farmers nationwide, ensuring the new policy reflects real sector challenges and opportunities.
Stakeholders agreed that a revised policy should prioritise accessible training, financial and technical support, and strategies to mitigate climate-related risks. Clearer regulations were also identified as essential for protecting farmers, promoting investment, and maintaining sustainable production standards.
The process signals a collaborative approach to policy development, bringing together government, farmers, and international partners. By aligning regulations, support programs, and innovation strategies with the realities of small-scale aquaculture, the sector is positioned to grow sustainably while improving livelihoods and food security.
