For Sherwin van Wyk, wine is more than a product; it is a platform for change. As founder of Brothers in Vines, he combines winemaking expertise with a commitment to supporting families and workers in the Western Cape, proving that agriculture thrives when community comes first.

Van Wyk’s journey began in the scenic Garden Route, where growing up surrounded by nature shaped his work ethic and love for the land. “My father believed that discipline started by working in the garden and looking after yourself,” he recalls. That foundation led him to Stellenbosch University, where he earned a BSc in agriculture with a focus on viticulture and oenology between 2003 and 2006.

After graduation, Van Wyk began his career as an intern at Groot Constantia, one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates. There, he learned to craft premium white and red wines, dessert wines, and port, building the technical skills that would later define his own brand. Moving to the Paarl region, he honed his understanding of how climate affects grape flavour, knowledge he cultivated over 15 years before launching his winery.

In 2015, Van Wyk founded Brothers in Vines with a bold philosophy: “believing that there is no box.” Inspired by his brother Rudger and the families connected to his work, the winery challenges traditional practices while supporting local communities. Central to the brand is the “virtual cellar” concept, sourcing grapes from multiple Cape Winelands vineyards to craft unique, premium wines. Today, Brothers in Vines offers cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, chenin blanc, and rosé, each reflecting careful vineyard selection and innovative winemaking techniques.

Beyond producing exceptional wine, Van Wyk prioritises people. Through Brothers in Vines, he supports 30 families, providing seasonal workers with training, employment, and opportunities to grow within the industry. “Upskilling seasonal workers and creating job opportunities will always be close to my heart,” he says.

Challenges remain, including high overhead costs and competing with established brands. Yet, Van Wyk views perseverance as his strongest asset. Looking ahead, he plans to expand internationally, targeting markets in the UK, Cameroon, Germany, and Canada, while continuing to generate sustainable income for his workers and local communities.

Van Wyk’s journey demonstrates how passion, family support, and a commitment to community can shape a thriving wine business. Brothers in Vines is not only a label; it is a model for how agriculture can deliver both quality products and meaningful social impact.

“My mission has always been clear: build a business that delivers quality service while uplifting the lives of those who work among the vines,” Van Wyk reflects. “Our wines are craftsmanship with heart, shaping the industry with purpose and passion.”
