On 28 November 2025, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ms Nokuzola Capa, joined Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Ms Mase Manopole, and Acting Executive Mayor Cllr Nomazizi Shwababa for a youth-focused agriculture dialogue at Sol Plaatje University. The event, themed “Harnessing the Potential of Youth to Transform Agrifood Systems and Attain Sustainable Food Security,” aimed to promote youth participation in agriculture and explore opportunities within the sector.

The programme included a handover of farming equipment to the university by Deputy Minister Capa. Both the Deputy Minister and MEC Manopole also planted trees in support of the 1 Million Tree Campaign, themed “My Tree, My Oxygen. Plant Yours Today.” The tree-planting symbolised growth, hope, and youth empowerment.

The dialogue focused on four priorities. First, it highlighted the role of academic and research institutions in promoting youth participation in agrifood systems. Second, it explored ways to strengthen the voice and involvement of young people in agricultural decision-making. Third, it introduced youth-empowerment mechanisms to expand the number of young farmers and entrepreneurs. Fourth, it emphasised improving adaptability through smart farming methods and technology to increase efficiency and sustainability.

MEC Manopole addressed young farmers directly, stating: “You are not the future of agriculture — you are the present. You are innovators, producers, scientists, environmental stewards, and entrepreneurs. Your province believes in you. Your country needs you. And your government is ready to walk with you, train with you, and grow with you.”

Deputy Minister Capa also led activities under the G20 Legacy Project, which promotes youth empowerment and sustainable development. As part of the initiative, she handed over a JoJo tank, a production tunnel, and participated in tree planting at the South Campus. These acts symbolised commitment to nurturing young talent in agriculture and creating opportunities for sustainable food production.

The event strengthened collaboration between government, academic institutions, and young farmers, providing practical tools, knowledge, and inspiration to actively participate in the agrifood sector. It underscores the government’s dedication to empowering youth as key contributors to sustainable agriculture and food security in the Northern Cape.
