The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has launched a Provincial Goat Improvement and Beneficiation Programme aimed at transforming the goat industry in the province. The initiative is designed to improve goat genetics, strengthen production systems, and create value-adding opportunities for smallholder and emerging farmers.
The programme was officially unveiled at Koedsberg Farm in partnership with Aphamo Goat Aggregator, the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and North-West University. These partners will provide technical expertise, research support, and scientific guidance to ensure modern and sustainable goat breeding and herd management practices.
Andrew Aphane, serving as the goat aggregator, described the programme as a “game-changer” for the industry. He said it would improve breeding, increase productivity, support value addition, and strengthen farmers’ livelihoods while positioning the North West province as a leading player in the goat sector.
Emerging farmers are among the first beneficiaries. Realeboga Mangwegape received improved goats for his herd and expressed optimism about the training and mentorship that will support the growth of his farm into a sustainable business.
At the launch, North West MEC for agriculture and rural development, Madoda Sambatha, highlighted the programme’s potential to formalise the goat sector, boost commercial value, and drive rural development. He said goats are well-suited to the province’s environment and offer strong market opportunities. The programme aims to ensure that goat farmers not only participate in the agricultural economy but lead it.
Farmers will gain access to improved breeding stock, technical training, advisory services, and aggregation platforms. By enhancing production and connecting farmers to markets, the initiative aims to increase incomes, create employment opportunities, and establish the North West livestock industry as a key contributor to rural economic growth.
