The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Hon Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has taken decisive action to support farmers affected by recent disasters across the Province. Reports from the Department’s disaster response units indicate extensive damage to crops, livestock, and farm infrastructure caused by floods, strong winds, and wildfires. Many farmers have faced severe losses, leaving entire communities struggling to recover. The scale of destruction has highlighted the urgent need for targeted government intervention to stabilise the agricultural sector.
To address these challenges, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa submitted an application to the National Treasury seeking financial assistance for affected farmers. The request aimed to compensate for the loss of critical assets, including irrigation systems, fencing, farm access roads, and buildings essential for farm operations. The Treasury has responded promptly, releasing R31.874 million to support recovery efforts. This funding is expected to provide immediate relief and enable farmers to rebuild essential infrastructure, restore production, and secure livelihoods.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in KwaZulu-Natal is working closely with farmers and key stakeholders to implement the recovery programme effectively. Efforts include assessing the most severely impacted farms, coordinating the distribution of funds, and providing technical support to rebuild damaged infrastructure. The Department emphasises collaboration with local communities to ensure that the programme not only addresses immediate losses but also strengthens resilience against future disasters.
MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa has stressed the importance of rapid intervention to restore stability in the agricultural sector. By providing financial and logistical support, the Department aims to safeguard food production, protect employment, and maintain the Province’s reputation for agricultural productivity. Farmers are being encouraged to engage with the Department to access assistance and participate in the recovery initiatives. The Department’s statement confirms that restoring the industry’s strength in KwaZulu-Natal remains a top priority, reflecting a commitment to long-term sustainability and disaster preparedness.
