The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, engaged with sugarcane farmers in the uMlalazi Municipality as part of the South African Farmers Development Association’s (SAFDA) 10-year anniversary celebration. The event took place at the Gingindlovu Sports Ground near Dokodweni on the province’s north coast.
The milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on SAFDA’s achievements since its inception in 2015 and to plan for future growth in the sugarcane sector. SAFDA has supported previously marginalised farmers, helping them navigate economic challenges and improve their livelihoods.
Speaking at the event, kaMadlopha-Mthethwa praised SAFDA for its resilience during tough economic periods and highlighted the visible impact on farmers’ lives. She noted the Department’s role in supporting farmers throughout the years, including the launch of multi-million rand Farmer Production Support Units (FPSUs) in Noordsberg (uMshwathi) and uMjindi (Jozini).
The MEC emphasised the importance of these facilities, stating they would not become underutilised. The FPSUs serve as storage hubs, training centres, and points for technology transfer, improving production efficiency and supporting thousands of farmers in the region.
KaMadlopha-Mthethwa reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to ongoing support, ensuring that the FPSUs and other infrastructure continue to enhance the value chain of sugarcane products. The engagement underscored a shared goal of advancing inclusive growth, sustainable prosperity, and greater participation in the agricultural sector for local farmers.
The SAFDA 10-year celebration highlighted both the challenges and successes within the sugarcane sector while reinforcing collaboration between government and farmers for continued development and economic empowerment.
