MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe recently visited Mitford Village in Ntabethemba to support local small-scale farming initiatives. The visit focused on promoting sustainable gardening and equipping women, children, and child-headed households with the tools to improve food security and income generation.
During the visit, the MEC distributed seedlings and essential gardening tools. These resources included a variety of vegetables suitable for local growing conditions, allowing families to cultivate nutrient-rich produce at home. The initiative provides an opportunity for households to produce their own food, reduce reliance on external markets, and explore small-scale farming as a source of income.
MEC Kontsiwe also joined a practical demonstration on vegetable planting techniques. Participants learned effective methods for soil preparation, spacing, watering, and pest management. The session highlighted sustainable gardening practices that can improve yields and ensure long-term productivity.
By combining hands-on training with the provision of tools and seedlings, the initiative strengthens community capacity in agriculture. Local families are now better equipped to manage gardens, grow diverse crops, and contribute to household nutrition and local food supply.
This initiative reflects a growing focus on empowering rural communities through practical farming support, helping households become more self-reliant and resilient.
