In celebration of Disability Month, the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture donated vegetable seedlings, gardening tools, and indigenous trees to Nomzamo Special School. The initiative aims to promote food security, environmental awareness, and practical agricultural skills among learners with disabilities.
The department’s extension and advisory services unit led the programme, demonstrating how to plant vegetables and indigenous trees. Learners, staff, and parents participated in hands-on activities, learning techniques for soil preparation, planting, and maintenance of garden crops. The interactive approach ensured that all participants could apply the skills in the school garden and at home.
This initiative is part of the department’s legacy programmes, which focus on empowering persons with disabilities through practical interventions. By combining food security projects with greening efforts, the department supports inclusive development while encouraging sustainable practices in local communities.
The donation and demonstration received enthusiastic support from the school community. Learners actively engaged in planting, while staff and parents expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge shared. The programme strengthened the school’s garden infrastructure and provided long-term resources for fresh vegetables and greenery.
Through such initiatives, the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture reinforces its commitment to inclusive growth and social development. By equipping schools with tools, skills, and resources, the department ensures that learners with disabilities benefit from hands-on agricultural education, healthy nutrition, and a greener environment.
