The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture is increasing support for women and youth through a new push to strengthen local production. The department handed over industrial machines and two hand held tractors to help communities expand food production and boost income from arts, crafts and clothing. MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe led the handover to cooperatives in Matatiele that are run by young people and women.
The tractors will help the cooperatives improve soil preparation and planting. You get faster work and lower labour costs with this type of equipment. Small producers often lose planting time because they rely on manual tools. The new tractors give them a chance to expand their fields and increase output. The support aims to help these groups grow their agricultural activities and generate more stable income.
The department also handed over 30 industrial sewing machines, a pottery wheel and a free standing slab roller. These tools give local producers the ability to make better quality products. The sewing machines support clothing production. The pottery equipment helps community producers improve craft output and reach new buyers. These machines allow small enterprises to produce more goods and enter local markets with stronger products.
Kontsiwe said the initiative is part of the department’s effort to support rural economies. She said women and youth remain central to this strategy because they drive many of the province’s small enterprises. The department plans to expand support across more districts to increase local production and create sustainable income opportunities.
The cooperatives that received the equipment expect improved output within the next season. The new tractors will help them plant more land. The sewing and pottery tools will help them produce goods with higher value. These improvements support job creation and local economic activity.
The department’s intervention shows a long term commitment to building stronger rural enterprises in the Eastern Cape. The focus on practical tools gives communities a clear path to increase production and strengthen their local economy.
