Acting Head of Department Mme Olivia Bodigelo-Nyezi, together with Bojanala District Director Ms Patronella Chabedi, visited Uitkyk Community Clinic as part of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme. The visit aimed to support household food security and promote sustainable nutrition in the community.

During the event, gardening tools and seedlings were handed over to the clinic and to 10 destitute families, providing practical support for growing food at home. Spinach, beetroot, and fruit trees were planted at the clinic, creating a living demonstration of sustainable food production. The initiative encourages healthy eating habits while ensuring that families have access to fresh, nutritious produce.

The Food Security Programme forms part of ongoing efforts to empower communities and assist vulnerable households. By providing resources and guidance for home gardening, the programme strengthens local food systems and reduces reliance on external food sources. It also offers a platform for community members to learn practical skills in crop cultivation and nutrition.

Mme Bodigelo-Nyezi emphasized the importance of integrating food security with community health initiatives. “Supporting households with tools and seedlings not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also builds long-term resilience and self-sufficiency,” she said.

Ms Chabedi highlighted the role of local clinics in promoting community well-being. “Planting gardens at the clinic creates a model for sustainable food production and serves as an educational resource for families,” she noted.

The visit reflects the department’s commitment to accelerating service delivery while addressing food insecurity in the Bojanala District. By combining resources, education, and hands-on support, the programme continues to make a meaningful impact on the health and livelihoods of vulnerable families.

The initiative demonstrates that practical interventions, such as community gardening, can strengthen nutrition, promote sustainable farming practices, and empower communities to take control of their food security.
