The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, through its Agricultural Economics Services Directorate, recently conducted a series of South African Good Agricultural Practices (SA-GAP) workshops across the province. The workshops were facilitated by the Perishable Products Export Control Board (PPECB), which oversees compliance in food handling, conducts farm inspections, and issues SA-GAP certificates.
The SA-GAP certificate is essential for farmers who want to supply fresh produce to major retail stores and enter formal markets. During the workshops, farmers learned about the requirements for certification, including water quality testing, proper inspection of production areas, safe handling of harvested produce, and accurate record-keeping for pest control and worker compliance.
The initiative is designed to equip farmers with the knowledge and standards needed to improve market access. By understanding and implementing SA-GAP requirements, farmers can enhance the quality and safety of their produce, which opens opportunities for higher-value markets and retail partnerships.
The Agricultural Economics Services Directorate will continue to support farmers in achieving full compliance with SA-GAP standards. Assistance includes guidance on inspections, record management, and preparation for certification. Farmers who meet the requirements can obtain SA-GAP certification, helping them expand their agricultural enterprises and increase profitability.
Farmers interested in the programme or in pursuing SA-GAP certification are encouraged to contact their local Agricultural Office for guidance and support. This ongoing initiative reflects the Department’s commitment to empowering farmers, improving food safety, and fostering growth in the agricultural sector.
