The Department of Agriculture has strengthened local food security in Alexandria by supporting piggery and poultry production. A total of 51 beneficiaries received production inputs aimed at increasing livestock output and improving household nutrition.
Under the piggery production programme, 55 beneficiaries received support. This group included 35 adult females, 13 adult males, one male youth, and one female youth. The inputs provided through the Food Security initiative equip farmers with the tools needed to manage and expand pig production effectively. Beneficiaries gain access to improved breeds, feed, housing materials, and technical guidance to enhance productivity and sustainability.
In the broiler production programme, six beneficiaries received inputs. These included one adult female, two adult males, and three female youth. The initiative focuses on poultry production to provide a steady supply of meat and eggs, while also offering income-generating opportunities for local households. Technical training accompanied the input distribution to ensure proper management, feeding, and biosecurity measures.
The beneficiaries are located in Ward 1 and Ward 2 of Ndlambe Municipality and are serviced by the Alexandria Office. By targeting these wards, the department aims to strengthen local food systems and support rural livelihoods.
The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to improving food security, supporting emerging farmers, and promoting inclusive agricultural development. Access to production inputs for both piggery and poultry allows beneficiaries to increase productivity, create sustainable income, and contribute to local economic growth.
