Today, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), together with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), hosted a workshop to strengthen South Africa’s aquaculture and inland fisheries sector. Attendees included farmers, co-operatives, INMED, Joburg Zoo, NGOs, and local municipalities.

The workshop highlighted opportunities for farmers to diversify into aquaculture as climate conditions shift. FAO research showed that small-scale fish farming can provide reliable income, improve food security, and support climate-resilient livelihoods.

A Legislative Review Report presented during the session revealed that provincial laws for inland fisheries are fragmented and outdated. There is currently no clear framework for small-scale operations, and alignment with the Biodiversity Act is needed to ensure sustainable practices.

The FAO Small-Scale Aquaculture Report introduced practical recommendations, including training for farmers, access to quality fingerlings, improved feed supply, and market support. Delegates discussed low-cost pond systems, cage farming, and recirculating aquaculture techniques that small-scale farmers can implement effectively.

Farmers and stakeholders noted that collaboration, knowledge sharing, and supportive legislation are critical to growing an inclusive and sustainable aquaculture sector. By adopting these strategies, small-scale farmers can increase productivity, tap into new markets, and build resilience against climate challenges.

The workshop underscored a shared commitment to unlocking the potential of South Africa’s inland fisheries, supporting local livelihoods, and expanding the country’s sustainable aquaculture industry.
