The community of Tshikuyu and surrounding villages under Musina Local Municipality recently gathered at the Tshikuyu Tribal Council for a government-led Landcare awareness campaign. The initiative aims to promote the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of the natural environment while highlighting the efforts of volunteers who contribute to caring for local ecosystems.
Historically, Tshikuyu and its neighboring areas were abundant in mopane trees, which provided habitat for mopani worms, an important source of nutrition for many residents. However, illegal woodcutting and deforestation have significantly reduced these trees, negatively affecting both the environment and local livelihoods. Recognizing this challenge, the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform organized the awareness campaign to educate and empower the community on environmental stewardship.
The event covered a wide range of topics relevant to sustainable land management and environmental conservation. Presentations addressed Climate Change, Landcare and Land Use Management, Natural Resource Management, Conservation, Agri-Business, Water Use Licensing, Environmental Quality, Soil Use Management, the Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP), and Disaster Risk Management. These discussions aimed to equip attendees with knowledge and practical strategies to protect their local ecosystems and utilize natural resources responsibly.
By fostering awareness and encouraging active participation, the campaign seeks to inspire residents to engage in environmental restoration projects and ensure sustainable use of resources. The event emphasized that collective action at the community level is crucial for reversing environmental degradation and securing the long-term well-being of both the land and the people who depend on it.
