The two-day Taking Legislature to the People feedback session wrapped up at Simon Gondwe Sport Centre in Delmas, highlighting government efforts to involve youth in agriculture and boost local farming initiatives.
The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) presented key programmes designed to equip young farmers with skills, funding, and opportunities. Initiatives like Masibuyele Esibayeni, the Agriculture Graduate Programme, Environmental Services Youth Programme, the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP), and the Presidential Economic Stimulus Package, including internships and bursaries, were highlighted. These programmes provide training, mentorship, and hands-on exposure to commercial and small-scale farming practices.
Young participants were encouraged to explore internships, the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), and available agricultural vacancies through DARDLEA’s website and social media platforms. Accessing these opportunities can help youth gain practical experience in crop production, livestock management, and farm business operations, laying the foundation for sustainable agricultural careers.
The National Department of Rural Development and Land Affairs was also asked to assist young farmers in identifying suitable land within the Victor Khanye Municipality for cultivation. This support is expected to help youth start vegetable gardens, small-scale livestock projects, or other farming ventures that can contribute to local economic growth.
The session reinforced the potential of agriculture as a driver of economic empowerment for youth. By combining training, mentorship, and access to land and funding, young farmers in Victor Khanye have the tools to develop practical skills, generate income, and contribute to the municipality’s food security and economic development.
This initiative offers a roadmap for young farmers to transform interest in agriculture into tangible, productive enterprises, showing that with support and guidance, the next generation can play a pivotal role in South Africa’s agricultural sector.
