Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) recently conducted livestock training in eManzana, within the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality. The training focused on equipping small-scale livestock farmers with practical knowledge on market demands, helping them align production with business opportunities.

During the training, Animal Extension Officers visited several local facilities to conduct a detailed market survey. Key stops included Ndalo Hotel, where inquiries focused on pork and poultry needs; Mpumalanga Butchery & Abattoir; BKB Auction; and Forever Resort Hotel. These visits allowed officers to gather critical data on livestock preferences, quality standards, peak demand periods, supply quantities, production locations, purchasing prices, and payment terms.

The team also explored challenges that buyers face in sourcing produce. This assessment helped identify gaps in supply chains and measured the willingness of local dealers to purchase from smallholder farmer groups. Insights from these engagements provide farmers with a clearer understanding of what buyers expect and how they can structure production to meet those expectations.

Following the field visits, officers compiled a comprehensive market survey report. This report will serve as a practical guide for participating farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions on livestock types, production scheduling, and marketing strategies. By aligning production with demand, small-scale farmers can increase profitability, reduce losses, and strengthen their position in the local market.

The SHEP initiative demonstrates the importance of connecting farmers with market intelligence. By providing actionable information, the program empowers smallholders to make data-driven decisions, improve production efficiency, and build sustainable livestock enterprises. This approach also supports regional economic growth by ensuring a reliable supply of quality livestock products to local hotels, butchers, and auction houses.
