On Friday, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, accompanied by Acting Head of Department Khululekile Mase, began the day with a detailed briefing at GDARD’s Tshwane Regional Office. The session outlined the department’s recent milestones, identified areas that require additional support, and emphasized the measurable outcomes of GDARD-funded agricultural projects. MEC Ramokgopa highlighted the importance of collaboration, accountability, and tangible impact as foundations for sustainable agricultural growth.

The first visit was to Lemme Chew Foods & Bevs, a fast-growing agro-processing enterprise owned by Katlego Suze. The company produces sauces, chillies, and herb-based products. Suze received support from GDARD in the form of agro-processing equipment to help expand her production capacity. Her success has earned her recognition as the 1st Runner-Up Agroprocessor 2024 and as a standout in both the Women Entrepreneur and Young Entrepreneur Awards. Her business serves as a model of how targeted government support can transform small enterprises into sustainable ventures.

The second stop was Farmer Fresh, a poultry production operation supported through the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP). The facility includes an abattoir capable of processing 2,000 birds per day and broiler structures accommodating up to 16,000 birds. GDARD also provided a refrigerated truck, a backup generator, and production inputs such as day-old chicks and feed. These investments have enabled Farmer Fresh to improve production efficiency and maintain consistent supply to local markets. The project shows how strategic infrastructure and input support can directly increase agricultural output and create employment.

The final stop was the Rooiwal Agripark, a collaborative hub for local farmers receiving both production and infrastructure support from GDARD. The farmers engaged with MEC Ramokgopa, sharing their progress and challenges. Many are now supplying produce to formal markets, contributing to local food systems and driving regional agri-economic development. The initiative represents GDARD’s focus on building strong agricultural value chains that link smallholder farmers with commercial opportunities.

The oversight visit formed part of a broader three-day program covering the Westrand, Sedibeng, and Tshwane regions. Through these engagements, MEC Ramokgopa gained direct insights into the performance of funded projects and the realities facing emerging farmers. The visit reinforced GDARD’s commitment to strengthening agricultural projects, expanding market access, and ensuring long-term growth for Gauteng’s farming communities.
