The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nakedi Kekana, officially handed over a tractor and tractor implements to Matika Subtrop Farming during a ceremony held at the Almighty Christian Church in Phiphidi Village yesterday. The implements included a trailer and a boom spray, marking a major milestone for the youth-led agricultural project.

Matika Subtrop Farming is a 10-hectare enterprise based in Vondo Village. The farm produces macadamia nuts, avocados, and litchis, contributing to food security and job creation in the area. The project is led by young farmer Khathutshelo Matika, whose determination has positioned the initiative as a model for youth participation in agriculture.

The handover was part of the Department’s Mechanisation Support Programme, which provides farmers with essential machinery and equipment to improve productivity and promote modern farming practices. The programme supports approved applicants who need tractors and implements to expand their production capacity and efficiency.

During the ceremony, Matika expressed his appreciation to the department for the support received. He emphasized his commitment to scaling up operations and using the equipment responsibly to improve yields and create more employment opportunities for local youth.

Impressed by Matika’s drive and dedication, Traditional Leader VhoThovhele Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase pledged to allocate additional land to the young farmer to help him expand his operations. He praised Matika for setting a positive example for other young people and for using agriculture as a tool for empowerment.

MEC Kekana commended both the farmer and the traditional leader for their collaborative spirit. She stressed the importance of partnerships between government, traditional authorities, and the private sector in advancing agricultural development.

“Our success depends on how well we work together to empower farmers and strengthen local economies,” said MEC Kekana. She also thanked Thovhele Tshivhase for his continued support of youth empowerment and agricultural growth within his community. The handover reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to building a sustainable agricultural sector that creates opportunities for young people, drives rural development, and contributes to food security in Limpopo.
