MEC Nakedi Kekana, Polokwane Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe, and other dignitaries will lead a vegetable garden planting demonstration to raise awareness about food insecurity and hunger. The initiative encourages communities and institutions to grow their own fresh produce, promoting self-sufficiency and healthy eating.
The demonstration will take place in Boshega Village and surrounding areas, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the community. In addition to the practical demonstration, MEC Kekana will distribute seed packages to 100 indigent households across the province, with 20 households from each district receiving supplies to start their own vegetable gardens at home.
The event coincides with World Food Day and includes support for vulnerable households through food hampers, production inputs, and other essential items. The local councillor and social worker worked together to identify households that will benefit from the donations, ensuring assistance reaches those most in need.
This programme highlights the importance of community participation in food production and builds awareness of sustainable gardening practices. By encouraging home-grown produce, the initiative seeks to improve nutrition, reduce dependence on external food sources, and create a model for long-term food security in rural communities.
The demonstration and seed handovers aim to inspire communities to take control of their food production, leaving a lasting legacy of self-reliance and resilience against hunger.
