Thuntsha Lerole, together with MEC for Agriculture Madoda Sambatha, HoD Thupi Mokhatlha, and the Chief Director for Agricultural Development Services, handed over garden tools to thirty-five families in Buffelsflei and Gairo near Ventersdorp. The initiative forms part of the department’s ongoing support to local communities to boost food production and promote sustainable livelihoods.
The handover included essential farming tools to assist households in establishing and maintaining productive home and community gardens. The programme aims to empower families with the resources needed to grow vegetables and other crops, enhancing food security and income generation at the local level.
In addition to the garden tools, farmer Sandile Ndlungwane received agro-chemicals, fertilizers, diesel, and maize seeds to cultivate 400 hectares of land. This support is designed to increase productivity, improve yields, and strengthen the sustainability of commercial and subsistence farming in the area.
MEC Sambatha emphasised the importance of equipping communities with both knowledge and resources to succeed in agriculture. “Providing tools and inputs is only the first step. We are committed to supporting these farmers through advisory services and ongoing guidance to ensure that their projects thrive,” he said.
The initiative highlights the department’s commitment to empowering local farmers, promoting food security, and stimulating economic activity in rural communities. By targeting both household and commercial-scale farming, the programme seeks to create opportunities for sustainable agricultural development in Ventersdorp and surrounding areas.
