LDARD MEC Nakedi Kekana visited the Tshivhase Traditional Council for a courtesy briefing ahead of the official handover of a tractor to Matika Farm in Thulamela Local Municipality, Vhembe District. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between traditional leadership, represented by VhoThovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, and government in advancing agricultural development at community level. The briefing provided an opportunity to discuss strategies for supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The tractor handover is part of the Department’s mechanisation support programme, which provides machinery and equipment to farmers who have applied for assistance. This initiative targets smallholder and emerging farmers, helping them access modern tools to improve productivity and efficiency on their farms. MEC Kekana highlighted that mechanisation reduces labour intensity, allowing farmers to focus on improving crop quality and yield.

During the visit, discussions focused on the importance of collaboration between traditional authorities and government structures to drive inclusive growth in the agricultural sector. Traditional leaders play a critical role in mobilising communities, providing guidance, and ensuring that government programmes reach intended beneficiaries. The Department emphasised that ongoing engagement strengthens trust and enhances the impact of agricultural interventions.

LDARD’s mechanisation programme aligns with broader objectives to enhance food security and support rural livelihoods across Limpopo. By equipping farmers with tractors, the Department helps them adopt modern agricultural practices that improve efficiency and sustainability. This support also contributes to the professionalisation of smallholder farming and strengthens the local economy.

MEC Kekana reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to empowering farmers with the necessary resources and technical guidance. The initiative forms part of a long-term vision to establish a modern, sustainable, and competitive agricultural sector in Limpopo. Farmers who receive mechanisation support are better positioned to increase production, access new markets, and participate fully in the provincial agricultural economy.

Through engagements like this, LDARD continues to foster partnerships with traditional leadership and communities, ensuring that agricultural development initiatives meet local needs and drive meaningful impact in rural areas.
