The LDARD Dzanani Sub-zone held an Information Day on the Safe Use of Chemicals for the farming community of Khomele and nearby villages. The event focused on educating farmers about safe chemical handling, storage, and application to promote sustainable and responsible farming.
McGregor Ntuli from AECI Chemicals under Plant Health stressed the importance of reading and understanding chemical labels. He reminded attendees that compliance with the Safe Use of Chemicals Act 36 of 1947 is not optional but a legal and safety requirement. Ntuli warned that negligence can cause severe accidents and urged farmers to protect themselves through awareness and correct practices.
Farmers actively participated in live demonstrations on proper personal protective equipment (PPE) use. Mr. Satch Moseane from the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) led the session, showing how correct PPE usage minimizes the risk of chemical exposure. Many farmers welcomed the session as practical and eye-opening, noting the importance of incorporating these safety measures into daily routines.
The event also explored broader themes in sustainable agriculture. Rathando Rolivhuwa led discussions on conservation agriculture, focusing on soil preservation and reduced environmental impact. Mr. Nethenzheni Edward presented on animal nutrition, explaining how balanced feeding improves livestock health and boosts farm productivity. These discussions emphasized that productivity and sustainability go hand in hand when farmers use the right methods and information.
The day ended with renewed optimism in the Khomele farming community. Farmers left better informed about chemical safety, environmental conservation, and livestock care. Ms. Nephembani R, representing the farmers, praised the LDARD organizing team for what she called a “masterpiece session.” She humorously admitted that many farmers had been using chemicals incorrectly out of ignorance, and thanked the department for providing much-needed clarity.
The Information Day served as a strong reminder that knowledge is the foundation of safe and productive farming. Through continued education and adherence to regulations, the Khomele community is now better equipped to farm responsibly and sustainably.
