KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has reaffirmed her Department’s commitment to revitalising struggling community farming projects. During an oversight visit to Tugela Ferry in uMsinga, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, accompanied by departmental officials, engaged with local cooperatives to address operational challenges and explore practical solutions.

The uMvithi Cooperative, part of the Tugela Ferry Irrigation Scheme along the uThukela River, was a key focus. The cooperative, with 180 members, has faced significant disruptions due to two damaged engine pumps that supply water for irrigation. The pumps were destroyed by flooding in January 2024, halting production and threatening the livelihoods of members and their families.

Block Seven Cooperative – uMgolweni, another beneficiary of the irrigation scheme, was also affected by the pump failures. The scheme consists of seven primary cooperatives that collectively support 1,800 members. These cooperatives cultivate fresh produce and supply it to local and regional retailers, making the irrigation scheme a vital source of income and food security for thousands of households in the area.

Addressing the leadership of the primary cooperatives, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa highlighted the Department’s Operation Siyahlola initiative. She explained that the visit was designed to gather feedback, identify immediate needs, and develop strategies to restore full operations. “We will work with the Rural Development Department to repair the water pumps and resolve related issues,” she said. “I have noted all your concerns, especially regarding the engine pump malfunction, which directly impacts your business operations and livelihoods. Our officials are committed to providing solutions that support the wellbeing of these gardens, which have sustained numerous families for many years.”

MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised collaboration with traditional leaders and local stakeholders to ensure lasting solutions. She added that the Premier, Mr AT Ntuli, has called for every corner of the province to have greenery. “We are committed to this vision by assisting struggling projects and restoring them to their former glory,” she said.

As part of the visit, the MEC distributed fertilizers to some of the cooperatives, reinforcing immediate support for crop production. The visit reflects the Department’s ongoing commitment to sustaining rural agriculture, improving food security, and supporting the livelihoods of farming communities in KwaZulu-Natal.
