DARD Hosts Farmers Day for Farmers with Disabilities in Welkom

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), through its Extension and Advisory Services, held a Farmers Day targeting farmers with disabilities today at Kopano Complex in Welkom. The event aimed to promote equal participation in agriculture and agribusiness while equipping farmers with tools, adaptive technologies, and knowledge to improve productivity.

The initiative also sought to strengthen collaboration between local government, training institutions, and communities to ensure inclusive agricultural development. Stakeholders including NYDS, SEFDA, DPSA, and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform were present to provide guidance and support.

During the event, Mr Sandile Nhlapho from Rural Development and Land Reform presented on strategic land acquisition, outlining opportunities for farmers to access land and establish sustainable projects. Mr Bongo from DARD Extension Services explained the department’s role in supporting farmers who already have land, focusing on advisory services, inputs, and resources to enhance production.

Mr Maswetsa from Goldfields TVET College shared information on courses and training programs available at the College, highlighting skills development opportunities for aspiring agripreneurs. Mr Jabu Nhlapho from SEFDA provided insights into funding for small businesses and training programs aimed at sharpening the skills of entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.

The Farmers Day reinforced DARD’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, ensuring that farmers with disabilities receive the support, knowledge, and resources needed to thrive in agriculture and agribusiness.
