TLU SA has unveiled an inspiring new initiative, “Plant for the Future”, designed to engage young South Africans in agriculture and encourage them to see farming as a meaningful and sustainable career.
The campaign forms part of TLU SA’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of agricultural leaders while promoting awareness of sustainable farming practices and food security across the country.
“The youth are the key to the future of our country and our agricultural industry,” says Bennie van Zyl, General Manager of TLU SA. “By planting hope and involving young people, we’re not only strengthening agriculture — we’re investing in South Africa’s future.”
Through “Plant for the Future”, TLU SA will collaborate with schools across all its regions, distributing seed packets and presenting short, interactive lessons that teach learners about the importance of farming, sustainability, and agriculture’s vital role in society.
“We want to ignite curiosity and excitement about agriculture among young people,” adds Van Zyl. “Our goal is to show that farming is not just about hard work — it’s innovative, creative, and essential for building a sustainable future.”
The first school to participate, Volkskool Bethal, received its maize seed packets on Friday afternoon. “It was a privilege to interact with the children and see their enthusiasm,” says Ronnie Schilling, TLU SA Eastern Region Manager. “Their positive response gives us confidence that this initiative will grow — quite literally — into something impactful.”
TLU SA plans to make “Plant for the Future” an annual initiative, inviting schools, educators, and community partners to get involved. By empowering young people with knowledge and practical experience, the organization hopes to nurture a new generation of farmers who will carry forward the spirit of sustainability and innovation.
Together, by planting seeds of hope today, we can grow a stronger, greener, and more resilient South Africa.
