A new chapter in global agricultural trade has begun. In Shanghai, China, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, John Steenhuisen, and China’s Minister of Commerce, Sun Meijun, signed a landmark stone fruit export protocol. The agreement officially opens the Chinese market to South African apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes for the first time.

This deal is the first multi-stone fruit agreement China has ever concluded with a single country. It positions South Africa as a leading exporter of premium fruit to one of the largest consumer markets in the world. The agreement strengthens a trade relationship already built on mutual respect, rigorous quality standards, and a shared vision for sustainable agricultural growth.

For South Africa’s fruit industry, the deal signals new growth and opportunity. China’s demand for imported fruit continues to rise, driven by urbanization, higher disposable incomes, and increasing preference for healthy diets. South Africa’s ability to meet this demand with reliable, high-quality produce gives it a competitive edge in the Asian market.

Minister Steenhuisen said the protocol represents years of scientific collaboration, biosecurity assessments, and trade negotiations. He emphasized that every step of the process was guided by international standards on food safety and plant health. The agreement reflects the strong confidence China has in South African agricultural systems and inspection controls.

The deal also brings major benefits to South African growers and exporters. The stone fruit industry supports over 30,000 jobs, particularly in rural areas of the Western Cape. With access to China’s growing middle class, farmers expect higher returns and greater stability in export volumes. This will boost incomes, strengthen farming communities, and create more sustainable livelihoods.

China’s Minister Sun Meijun said the partnership demonstrates how agricultural trade can bridge economies and cultures. He praised South Africa’s commitment to quality and noted that the agreement aligns with China’s goals of diversifying its food imports and promoting green trade.

The new protocol also strengthens South Africa’s position in Asia’s competitive fruit market. Other African countries have struggled to secure similar multi-fruit agreements due to stringent biosecurity requirements. By meeting these standards, South Africa sets a benchmark for agricultural excellence and trade diplomacy on the continent.

Both ministers highlighted the importance of continued collaboration to ensure smooth implementation. Technical teams from both nations will oversee the inspection, packaging, and shipment processes to maintain compliance with agreed protocols.

This milestone reflects more than trade expansion. It is a statement of trust, quality, and cooperation between two nations that see agriculture as a foundation for mutual prosperity. With this agreement, South African orchards will soon bring their fresh, sun-ripened fruit to millions of Chinese consumers, symbolizing a future built on shared growth and opportunity.
