The inaugural agricultural lecture took place yesterday at Palmietfontein Farm near Klerksdorp. The event brought together farmers, policymakers, and experts for a full day of learning and collaboration focused on strengthening the agricultural sector in North West.

Key organisations, including the Land Bank, the Agricultural Research Council, the National Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, delivered insightful presentations that addressed the future of sustainable farming and rural development.

The Land Bank shared financial strategies aimed at supporting smallholder and emerging farmers. Their presentation focused on improving access to credit and reducing barriers that often prevent rural farmers from scaling their operations. The institution also highlighted new funding instruments designed to help farmers recover from drought and market fluctuations.

The Agricultural Research Council focused on innovation in crop production and livestock management. Representatives discussed recent advancements in drought-resistant seed varieties, soil fertility improvement, and pest control methods. They also emphasized the importance of research partnerships with local universities and farmer cooperatives.

The National Department of Agriculture outlined current policies that aim to boost food security and promote youth participation in farming. Officials discussed plans to integrate digital technologies into farming practices to improve yields and reduce costs.

The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development highlighted ongoing efforts to accelerate land redistribution and provide post-settlement support to beneficiaries. The department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that land reform projects translate into productive and sustainable enterprises.

Farmers and agribusiness leaders used the platform to exchange ideas on climate resilience, market access, and innovation in agricultural practices. The event also created valuable networking opportunities between government departments, research institutions, and the private sector.

Organisers said the lecture will become an annual event to promote dialogue and strengthen partnerships within the province’s agricultural ecosystem. The initiative aligns with North West’s broader goal of positioning agriculture as a driver of economic growth and job creation.

The event closed with a call to action for all stakeholders to collaborate in building a more resilient and inclusive agricultural future for the region.
