The Department of Agriculture’s Ngqushwa Local office handed over food production inputs to local farmers yesterday as part of the Ilima Lokulima Food Production Programme (2025–2030). The programme aims to support small-scale farmers and strengthen local food security.
Members of the Ngqushwa community received essential inputs including poultry feed, piggery feed, and seeds for potatoes, carrots, and butternut. These inputs are intended to boost local food production and enable farmers to generate sustainable income.
The handover event was attended by key local leaders. Ngqushwa Local Municipality Mayor delegated councilors Nomzamo Mthathi, Nandipha Dyalvani, and Nondyebo Jako to represent the municipality. Chief Njokweni from the Emazizini Traditional Council and the deputy chairperson of the Ngqushwa House of Traditional Leaders were also present. They delivered messages of support, encouraging farmers to take full advantage of the programme.
The Ilima Lokulima Food Production Programme targets increased agricultural productivity, job creation, and economic growth at the local level. By providing farmers with feed and high-quality seeds, the Department of Agriculture ensures that beneficiaries can improve livestock rearing and crop yields.
Farmers expressed appreciation for the support, noting that access to inputs is a key challenge in sustaining their agricultural activities. With the programme’s support, they can expand poultry and piggery operations, while diversifying crop production to include nutrient-rich vegetables.
The Ngqushwa handover aligns with broader national efforts to enhance food security and empower rural communities. Officials emphasized the importance of responsible farming practices, proper use of inputs, and maintaining productive partnerships between the Department, local authorities, and traditional leadership structures.
This initiative underlines the commitment of the Department of Agriculture to support smallholder farmers, ensuring they have the resources needed to improve livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.
