The National Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (RPO) participated in a panel discussion titled “The Fight Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease in South Africa” at the Stellenbosch University (SU) Woordfees on Saturday. The session, organised by the SU Student Council, brought together key voices from the agricultural and veterinary sectors to address one of the country’s most persistent animal health challenges.
The discussion was led by Dr. Theo de Jager from Saai, with panelists including Dr. Frikkie Maré, CEO of the National RPO, and Willem van Jaarsveld from Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS). Together, they explored the current status of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in South Africa, their economic impact, and the coordinated strategies needed to manage and prevent further spread.
Dr. Maré highlighted the severe consequences that recurring FMD outbreaks have on the livestock industry. The disease not only affects animal health and productivity but also disrupts trade, reduces export opportunities, and undermines farmer confidence. He emphasized that effective control depends on collaboration among producers, veterinary authorities, and government departments.
Willem van Jaarsveld shared insights on how RMIS supports producers through risk management systems and industry coordination. He stressed the importance of biosecurity, movement control, and rapid response to disease detection as key components of prevention.
Dr. de Jager guided the conversation toward long-term solutions, including improved vaccination programs, surveillance systems, and the need for greater accountability in disease management. He noted that strong partnerships between government and producer organizations are critical for rebuilding international trust and restoring export market access.
The panel agreed that combating foot-and-mouth disease requires collective responsibility and sustained investment in animal health infrastructure. Education, awareness, and producer engagement were identified as vital in ensuring compliance with control measures.
The event at Woordfees demonstrated the growing role of academic and industry collaboration in tackling national agricultural issues. By engaging students, producers, and policymakers in open discussion, the session helped highlight the urgent need for unified action to protect South Africa’s red meat sector and strengthen its biosecurity systems.
