MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, has called on young people to take an active role in transforming Gauteng through agriculture and environmental initiatives. Speaking on the importance of youth engagement, MEC Ramokgopa emphasized that agriculture offers opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

“We want to activate agriculture as a space for young people — turning dumping sites into gardens, food production hubs, and learning spaces,” said MEC Ramokgopa. Her vision focuses on converting underutilized or neglected urban areas into productive agricultural spaces that provide food security, learning opportunities, and economic potential.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote clean, green, and sustainable urban environments. By engaging youth in agriculture and environmental stewardship, Gauteng aims to create vibrant communities while addressing pressing challenges such as waste management, food insecurity, and unemployment.

MEC Ramokgopa highlighted the dual benefits of the programme: environmental restoration and youth development. By transforming dumping sites into gardens, young people gain practical skills in farming, project management, and sustainability. These skills can be applied to entrepreneurial ventures, community development projects, or further agricultural education.

The MEC also stressed the importance of partnerships between government, schools, and local organizations. Collaboration is essential to provide resources, training, and mentorship to young participants. “A clean, green, and productive Gauteng starts with our youth,” she noted, emphasizing that sustainable development depends on active engagement and innovation from the next generation.

Through these programmes, Gauteng aims to build resilient communities where youth are empowered to lead in food production, environmental conservation, and urban agriculture. MEC Ramokgopa’s vision demonstrates a commitment to creating opportunities that combine social, economic, and ecological benefits while positioning agriculture as a viable career path for young South Africans.

The initiative sets a model for integrating agriculture, education, and environmental action into urban development, ensuring that the province’s youth are central to building a sustainable and productive future for Gauteng.
