The Agricultural Research Council, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, successfully hosted the second provincial stakeholder engagement for the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction Plan in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on 14 October 2025. The consultation aimed to advance strategies that reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable farming practices across the province.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including farmers, agricultural experts, government representatives, and industry leaders. Participants discussed practical interventions to minimize emissions in crop and livestock production while enhancing climate resilience. The engagement also focused on identifying sector-specific challenges and opportunities for implementing mitigation measures effectively.

Speakers emphasized the need for collaboration between government, research institutions, and farmers to achieve measurable reductions in GHG emissions. They highlighted the role of innovative farming techniques, improved livestock management, and sustainable crop practices in reducing environmental impact without compromising productivity.

The consultation also addressed the integration of climate-smart agriculture into existing provincial development plans. Stakeholders explored methods to support farmers with training, technology adoption, and access to funding, ensuring that emission reduction strategies are both practical and scalable.

By hosting the second provincial engagement, the Agricultural Research Council and its partners reinforced their commitment to building a sustainable agricultural sector in KwaZulu-Natal. The initiative supports national goals for climate change mitigation, enhances food security, and encourages long-term economic growth within the agricultural industry.

The outcomes of the meeting will inform the next steps in the National GHG Emission Reduction Plan, providing actionable strategies that stakeholders across KwaZulu-Natal can implement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the province’s climate resilience.
