The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), recently hosted the KYD Farmers’ Day – Kaonofatso ya Dikgomo. The event brought together farmers and livestock enthusiasts to explore best practices in beef cattle management and promote sustainable livestock farming.
Participants engaged in discussions on key topics, starting with the importance of proper animal identification. Experts highlighted how accurate identification supports traceability, disease control, and overall herd management.
Livestock health was a central focus, with sessions covering poisonous plants and their impact on cattle. Farmers learned how to identify hazardous flora and implement preventive measures to reduce livestock losses. Synchronization and artificial insemination were also covered, offering insights on improving herd genetics, reproductive efficiency, and long-term herd productivity.
Winter feeding strategies were emphasized, equipping farmers with techniques to maintain cattle health and weight during periods of scarce grazing. Foot and Mouth Disease prevention was another critical topic, with guidance on biosecurity, vaccination protocols, and monitoring systems to safeguard herds against outbreaks.
Disaster management in livestock farming rounded off the program. Farmers were trained on emergency preparedness, risk assessment, and strategies to minimize losses during droughts, floods, or disease outbreaks.
GDARD and ARC stressed that events like KYD Farmers’ Day strengthen the agricultural sector by equipping farmers with practical skills, knowledge, and resources. By focusing on animal health, productivity, and sustainable practices, the initiative contributes to building a resilient livestock industry in Gauteng.
The department encouraged farmers to continue implementing these strategies on their farms to support a sustainable agricultural future, emphasizing the shared responsibility of #TakingCareOfTheLivestock and advancing rural development.
