Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, recently celebrated the department’s milestones in accountability and service delivery, highlighting efforts that have strengthened governance and improved support for farmers across the province.
Speaking at a provincial gathering, MEC Ramokgopa outlined key achievements, including streamlined service delivery processes, enhanced transparency in funding allocations, and improved accessibility of agricultural resources for emerging farmers. The department has also introduced monitoring systems to ensure programs meet their intended impact, providing timely support to smallholder and commercial farmers alike.
Alongside celebrating these achievements, the department has intensified knowledge-sharing initiatives for small stock farmers. These programs focus on improving productivity, disease management, breeding practices, and market access. Farmers participating in the initiatives gain practical insights into modern farming techniques, sustainable practices, and value chain development, helping them to grow both production and income.
The knowledge-sharing sessions also emphasize collaboration. Farmers are encouraged to form cooperatives and networks, allowing them to pool resources, share expertise, and negotiate better market opportunities. This approach aligns with the provincial strategy to strengthen the small stock sector, particularly in rural communities where agriculture drives livelihoods.
MEC Ramokgopa stressed that the department’s dual focus on accountability and farmer support ensures public resources are used effectively while boosting agricultural productivity. She highlighted the importance of continuous learning and innovation, noting that empowered farmers are better positioned to contribute to Gauteng’s economic growth and food security.
The initiative has been welcomed by farmers who report improved access to information, better farm management practices, and a clearer understanding of market dynamics. By combining strong governance with targeted support, Gauteng is building a more resilient agricultural sector while promoting sustainable growth for small stock farmers across the province.
