The Capricorn North-Western Agro-Ecological Zone gathered farmers from Ga-Mabitsela and nearby villages in Moletjie, under Polokwane Municipality, for an information-sharing session focused on maize production.
Maize remains one of South Africa’s most vital food crops. It is central to the country’s food security and rural livelihoods. For smallholder and emerging farmers, maize provides both food and income. Strengthening its production helps reduce hunger, supports local employment, and keeps rural economies active.
The session, organized by the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD), aimed to equip farmers with practical knowledge and modern techniques to increase productivity and sustainability. Experts shared insights on managing maize production under dryland conditions, emphasizing soil fertility management, proper spacing, and the use of drought-tolerant seed varieties.
Farmers also received training on the safe use and storage of agrochemicals, a key step in ensuring environmental protection and human safety. The department highlighted the importance of using registered products and following safety guidelines to prevent contamination and health risks.
Another focus area was the ongoing 2026/27 Farmers Support Programme, which assists qualifying producers with inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and technical support. Farmers were reminded that applications for the program will close in nine working days, on 17 October 2025.
LDARD representatives stressed that such engagements are essential to building resilient food systems and promoting responsible farming practices. The department continues to support small-scale producers through training, input subsidies, and access to extension services.
The meeting reaffirmed LDARD’s commitment to empowering rural farmers, improving maize yields, and ensuring that agriculture remains a strong driver of economic growth in Limpopo. By bridging knowledge gaps and encouraging innovation, the department is helping local farmers adapt to changing conditions and secure the future of maize production in the province.
