The Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will host World Food Day (WFD) on 16 October in KwaZakhele, Gqeberha.
The event highlights the ongoing challenges of food insecurity and aims to promote sustainable solutions for healthy diets and productive communities. This year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” underscores the importance of collaboration between governments, organisations, and local communities to build resilient and food-secure societies.
The National Food and Nutrition Security Survey (NFNSS) has identified the Eastern Cape as one of the provinces with high levels of food insecurity. In response, the commemoration will focus on practical interventions, including the distribution of food parcels and agricultural inputs to households and small-scale farmers.
Dignitaries and senior officials will visit local projects, providing direct support to farmers and community members. These initiatives are designed to improve household food security while encouraging self-sustaining agricultural practices.
World Food Day also provides a platform to showcase local farming projects that enhance productivity, nutrition, and livelihoods. The departments and FAO continue to emphasise the role of partnership and community engagement in building resilient food systems that benefit farmers and households alike.
By highlighting practical farming solutions and community support, the Eastern Cape’s WFD activities demonstrate the critical link between agricultural development and food security, reinforcing the province’s commitment to a healthier, more sustainable future.
